Julia Fischer receives Johannes Gutenberg Endowed Professorship 2025 at Mainz University
Julia Fischer is Professor of Primate Cognition at the University of Göttingen and Head of the Department of Cognitive Ethology and Deputy Director of the German Primate Center. Her research focuses on the evolutionary development of communication, intelligence and social behavior in primates. She is particularly interested in the similarities and differences between apes and humans: How much human is there in apes - and how much ape is there in humans?
At the University of Göttingen, Julia Fischer will guide us through the world of ape societies in the summer semester of 2025. After an introduction to the diversity of social forms and the social behavior of primates, the focus will be on the development and importance of social relationships between animals, as well as the adaptation of communication and social and ecological intelligence to successfully navigate complex societies. Guest lectures on the transmission of disease between apes and humans, the genetic basis of primate evolution, and the role of migration in social and cultural evolution will round out the lecture program.
