Linear Models and their application in R

Save as calendar entry

Registration possible from June 23 - July 27

Instructor: Dr Roger MundyUniversity of Göttingen and German Primate Center Göttingenrmundry(at)dpz.eu

Registration:

  • Registration is possible from June 23 to July 27, 2025.
  • Online Registration Form
  • Please note: Registration is binding. Participants who do not attend without valid reason or who cancel at short notice will receive lower priority in future course rounds. No-shows may be barred from GGNB courses for up to one year.

Course Content and Structure

The course offers a balanced mix of theoretical input and hands-on sessions. Participants will:

  • Work through various statistical models
  • Linear models from simple regression to Generalized Linear Mixed Models
  • Learn to visualize results
  • Understand model assumptions and diagnostics
  • Practice writing up results for the methods and results sections of scientific papers

Comprehensive handouts will be provided during the course.

Requirements

  • Statistics Background: Basic knowledge of applied statistics is required, including concepts such as null hypothesis testing and significance levels.
  • Basic R Skills: You should know how to import data, run basic tests (e.g. t-test, ANOVA, non-parametric tests), and create simple plots in R. Two tutorials (ca. 100 pages in total) on R basics and plotting will be provided in advance; studying them thoroughly before the course is mandatory.
  • Full Participation: Sessions build on one another. Missing even a few hours may affect your ability to follow the course. Additional study and practice between sessions are strongly recommended.

Target Audience and Admission

  • Who Can Participate: Open to (PhD) students, postdocs, academic staff, and faculty members.
  • Priority: If the number of registrations exceeds available slots, priority will be given to members of research institutions affiliated with the Göttingen Campus. Past no-shows or short-notice cancellations may result in lower admission priority.

Logistics

  • Format: The course will take place in person, Monday to Friday, approximately 5-6 hours per day plus breaks, from morning to afternoon. Limited to 40 participants.
  • Language: The course language is English.
  • Credits: Certificates of participation can be credited toward the PhD program "Behavior and Cognition" and GGNB programs. Please consult your program coordinator regarding credit points. No final exam or test will be held.
  • Registration Details: Registration is only possible via the online portal. Please include your full name, academic status (e.g. PhD student, postdoc), institution, and, if applicable, your study program. Indicate if you have previously participated in a similar course.

Please register only if you are able to fully commit to the three-week period – continuous attendance is essential for the success of the course.
